I’m starting to really think that electric cars are a complete scam. Aside from the issues inherent in needing tons and tons of lithium ion batteries -which range from environmental costs of mining and manufacture and rare earth politics all the way to the potentially causing the price of prescription meds to skyrocket- there’s also a bunch of unaddressed safety issues that have sort of being hand-waved away by Elon Musk reply guys and other electric car boosters.
Here’s my favorite boomer mechanic to explain why you probably don’t want to buy an electric car, at least until fire departments figure out how to rescue people from them without getting electrocuted.
Also the idea that it’s an efficient use of resources to replace every single one of the billion (literally) cars on the world’s roads, rather than transition to a society that doesn’t need that many individual automobiles. It’s just insanity. Regardless of whether they’re burning gasoline, it takes a fuckton of energy, minerals, chemicals, and yes even petroleum to produce cars and all the parts and infrastructure that they require. Merely manufacturing a gasoline-powered car produces about as much carbon emissions as driving it for about 20,000 miles. Those emissions are still incurred for electric cars too.
